Genre takes similar themes and sorts them into groups with labels. “Genres give us a way to categorize or describe types of compositions.” (BBG, pg.5) According to the “Bedford Book of Genres”, genres are flexible, open up possibilities, and help us define different types of writings. In “Navigating Genres” it proposes the idea that the genre of a particular writing starts off as a free for all per say. Basically your piece of writing can be any type of genre you want and there are millions of possibilities. Once the genre is determined then you can really dig deeper into the material you are trying to focus on. In “The Rhetorical Situation” it talks about the different characteristics of different situations, and how someone can define characteristics differently depending on the situation in which they find themselves.
The last genre in which I composed was my resume. A resume is used to sell someone to a company to hopefully get a job. This took longer than I expected, but before I created my resume applying for jobs took hours filling in all the information then not being able to completely show my strong points to my future employer was really frustrating. After I created my resume I received a job offer within two weeks and was able to start working! Before I read the text I had no clue that a resume was considered a type of genre, but now after learning what a genre is defined as I can understand how a resume is considered a genre.
